Does a VoIP Kids Phone Work with Patchy WiFi?

Yes — with one thing to check first

WiFi landline phones like Kite Phone need stable (not fast) connectivity. If your WiFi is patchy in the room where you'd place the phone, call quality can suffer. The good news: most UK homes have a simple fix.

A £20-40 WiFi extender or a short ethernet cable from your router solves the problem for almost every family. Here's how to know which solution fits your home — and whether Kite Phone will work for you.

Three ways to fix patchy WiFi

Any of these solutions will give the Yealink T31W phone the stable connection it needs. Choose based on your home layout and preference.

WiFi extender (most common fix)

£20-40Easy

A simple plug-in WiFi extender (£20-40 on Amazon) boosts signal to the room where you want the phone. No technical knowledge required — plug it in halfway between your router and the phone location.

Ethernet cable (most reliable)

£5-10Easy

If your router is in the same room or nearby, a direct ethernet cable provides the most reliable connection. The Yealink T31W has an ethernet port. Cables are cheap (£5-10) and can run along skirting boards.

Powerline adapter (through mains)

£30-50Easy

Powerline adapters send internet through your electrical wiring. Plug one near your router, another near where you want the phone. More reliable than WiFi extenders in older houses with thick walls.

Before you decide

Check signal strength in your preferred room

Stand where you want the phone. If your mobile shows 2-3 WiFi bars, you're probably fine. If it drops frequently or shows 0-1 bars, you'll need one of the fixes above.

Consider distance from router

If the room is close to your router (same floor, one room away), even patchy WiFi often works. Issues are more common 2+ rooms away or on different floors.

Think about ethernet as backup

If your router is visible from where you want the phone, ethernet is the easiest and most reliable option — no extenders needed.

Confident your fix will work?

If you've confirmed WiFi coverage or plan to use ethernet, you can proceed with your order. The phone arrives pre-configured — just connect and call.

WiFi and VoIP questions answered

Will patchy WiFi affect call quality?

Yes, if the phone can't maintain a stable WiFi connection, calls may drop or sound choppy. VoIP needs consistent (not fast) connectivity. This is why we recommend confirming coverage or using ethernet before committing.

Do I need fast broadband?

No. VoIP calls use about 100kbps — even a basic 5Mbps connection is more than enough. The issue with patchy WiFi isn't speed, it's stability. A strong WiFi signal to a slow broadband connection works fine; a weak WiFi signal to fast broadband will cause problems.

Can I test before committing?

We can't send trial units, but you can test your WiFi stability yourself. Stream a video call (FaceTime, WhatsApp) from the room where you'd place the phone. If it stays stable for 10+ minutes, VoIP will work. If it stutters or drops, you'll need a fix first.

What if I try the fixes and it still doesn't work?

Contact us before ordering if you're unsure. We can talk through your layout and advise whether Kite Phone will work. We'd rather help you confirm suitability than have you order something that doesn't work for your home.
